250 to 185 pounds. ex-smoker (4 pack a day) Couch Potato turned Runner!
Well I have overdone it AGAIN, My shins have bothered my since day one. First I could not run 20 seconds without intense burning, then I worked on strengthening them and it improved. I could run a mile without them bothering me, even that started to get better and I was going 5 miles without them stopping me. All along they have been sore, if I touch my legs its tender like they are bruised. It was nothing major I wasn’t in agony or anything I just dealt with it. This last week I think I went to far, I really tweaked the shin on my right leg good. Walking is difficult now I’m taking some time off running, maybe 4 days icing my shin everyday and in general taking it easy. Hopefully it won’t take to long before I can get back to running. I always get obsessed with anything I do and go overboard, running is no exception to that. Hopefully I don't damage myself to my by pushing so hard, I do try to limit myself and take it gradual!
This Saturday is the Deerfield Half Marathon, the weather is looking good and my legs are feeling ok. It looks like I am going to run it, the 10k that is. Here is a Video of the course.
Looks Like it will be a real Challenge, tough course.
I took a good week off from running and since I started up again I have felt great, the issues I was having with my legs are a thing of the past now. It was my legs holding me back my cardio fitness wasn't an issue, now it’s the opposite. I need to work on building my cardio capacity now that my legs can handle running.
I have run 25 miles so far this week that is the most I have ever run in a week EVER!
It feels great to be able to run everyday, I'm trying to increase my distance each day and so far I have. At the moment I am trying out the Galloway Method
I am fairly worn out after having ran the most I have in a week so I am not sure about it, Saturday I plan to just run the 10k, then I will go back to training using the Galloway Method and see how it goes. It does help to keep my heart rate down and build cardio fitness and that is what I need to work most on at this point. I will post again Saturday or Sunday about the race.
I Have not said or been around much on the net since my race last Saturday, truth is I have not been feeling very well. I was about 40 degrees and raining on race day, I wound up with a cold. Tomorrow is the VASA Trail race and the weather is supposed to be even colder and raining again ! I just don't feel up to running in that weather. I'm disappointed, but it's silly to drive all that way so I can spend over 2 hours in a freezing cold rain. I just don't have the energy right now anyway, I still have 3 ? more races on my schedule for this season, the weather can't be horrible for all of them !
I would like to thank RunnerDude for the post on his blog about me. It's something I thought about posting here but can never find the words for it. It has been tough and still is, I still wake up in the middle of the night having had a dream about her and not being able to go to sleep. I guess that is why the running is so important to me right now and why I put so much pressure on myself about it. She was an Olympic athlete I wish I could share this with her..
How Running Changed My Life: Ron's Story
OMG I hate that pic !
Distance 10k finished in 53 minutes.
I didn't get the sleep I wanted the day before, Only had about 3 hours in two days. It was cold raining and a 2 hour drive away. I was questioning WTH I was thinking getting into this ! It was a fairly small race not a lot of people there. I was really nervous, I don't at all think of myself as a runner. I don't even run outside unless I have to...
It was a very narrow course

I think I ran faster just because of that, defiantly my fastest time. Sadly my knee and groin are paying for it now ! but I did win entry into next years race series. so I can look forward to the same pain next year :)
Up Next
If I am recoverd enough by then anyway lol...
Tonight I had a great run, 5k without any pain or stopping. It was exactly what I needed to get my head in the right place for Saturday. I am learning its 90% mental, the running means so much to me right now that I am putting to much pressure on myself over it. I can't wait for Saturday just to get this first race out of the way !
I have added a couple more races to my Race Schedule, First race 10/03 in Alma (10k) race number two in TC on the VASA Trail 10/10 (10k) Race three 10/17 in Mt Pleasant (10k) and 10/24 My Birthday ! a 15k race in Mt Pleasant
